Indiana County ATHENA Leadership Program
About ATHENA
ATHENA International is a catalyst for developing diverse, transformative leaders worldwide through experiential programs that ignite, amplify and celebrate girls, women, and allies, from young scholars to seasoned professionals.
In addition to its ATHENA Leadership Institute,™ supporting women and men entrepreneurs through the Community Program and ATHENAPowerLink®, communities all over the globe have the opportunity to recognize outstanding individuals who are pioneering leaders, with global, national and community ATHENA Leadership Awards. These awards, open to both men and women, include more than 8,200 recipients from world-renowned icons to community champions, celebrating those who embody the Eight Principles of Enlightened Leadership™ -- Live Authentically & Learn Constantly; Build Relationships & Foster Collaboration; Act Courageously & Advocate Fiercely; and Give Back & Celebrate.
The ATHENA Award recognizes career or professional excellence, leadership in community service, and individuals who mentor and open doors of leadership opportunities for women.
The ATHENA Award was founded in Lansing, Michigan, in 1982 by Martha Mayhood Mertz; a few years later, General Motors became the national underwriter of ATHENA International.
ATHENA in Indiana County
The late Chuck Spadafora, former owner-operator of Colonial Motor Mart of Indiana, brought the ATHENA Award to Pennsylvania and to Indiana County, at a time when little was done to recognize community leadership - especially women’s leadership.
Chuck Spadafora went on to serve on the ATHENA International Board of Directors, and was a champion for the program and for women’s leadership throughout his lifetime. He was honored in with the Indiana County ATHENA Leadership Award in 2002.
Chuck Spadafora’s son, Charles (C.J.) Spadafora, is the current owner-operator of Colonial Motor Mart and has not only continued his father’s legacy as an active supporter of the ATHENA program, but in 2023, introduced a scholarship program for students in Indiana County high school ATHENA clubs, the Spadafora Family ATHENA Scholarship. This $5,000 scholarship, donated by the Spadafora family of Indiana, is given to a high school senior from an Indiana County ATHENA club and is established in honor and memory of the late Chuck Spadafora.
Ellen Ruddock continues to be the coordinator for the Indiana County ATHENA Leadership Award Recipients group, with all ATHENA recipients as working members of the group.
Indiana County is also the home of an ATHENA Global Award recipient, Christine Jack Toretti, who is an active member of the ATHENA recipients group. Less than 50 global ATHENA Awards have been presented.
Since that first award presentation in Indiana County, the ATHENA leadership program in Indiana County has continued to evolve with new initiatives and programs designed to support women’s leadership and growth and follow the ATHENA tenants:
Continued annual recognition of an ATHENA award recipient through the Indiana County Leader’s Circle program
Supporting the development of ATHENA Clubs in Indiana County high schools – currently three: Indiana Area High School, Marion Center High School, and United High School (newly established)
Working with the C.J. Spadafora and the Spadafora family, presenting the Spadafora Family ATHENA Scholarship to a member of an ATHENA Club in Indiana County (first recipient was selected in 2023)
The Emerging Women’s Leaders Luncheon, a mentoring event for members of the ATHENA high school clubs and community leaders, including past ATHENA recipients, held annually since 2013 (with pauses during the pandemic)
The ATHENA Young Professional Award, introduced in 2017. The ATHENA Young Professional Award honors an individual who is under the age of 40 and who demonstrates excellence, creativity, and initiative in his or her business or profession.
For many years, the ATHENA Award was part of the Indiana County Leader’s Circle program, and the ATHENA finalists and recipients were honored with the Indiana County Civic Leader recipients and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania President’s Medal of Distinction honoree at the Leader’s Circle event.
In 2023, the Indiana County ATHENA Leadership Award recipients, working with the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, made the decision to recognize the finalists and recipients of both the ATHENA Award and the ATHENA Young Professional Award and the recipient of the Spadafora Family ATHENA Scholarship at an expanded Emerging Women’s Leaders Luncheon.
The ATHENA leadership program is built on the generous support of community sponsors. In addition to Colonial Motor Mart, the ATHENA program is Indiana County is sponsored by S&T Bank, the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, and media sponsors Renda Broadcasting and the Indiana Gazette.
About the ATHENA High School Program
The ATHENA Leadership Model (ALM) provides a framework for the ATHENA Club members during formative and sometimes challenging developmental years. The eight principles of Live Authentically, Learn Constantly, Build Relationships, Foster Collaboration, Act Courageously, Advocate Fiercely, Give Back, and Celebrate are embedded in each activity, service project, and leadership opportunity within the clubs. The ATHENA Leadership Model and its eight principles assist these young leaders in developing their own roadmap for personal growth and success in the endeavors of their choosing.
The ATHENA clubs within the middle and high schools provide opportunities for students to learn about the ALM, explore leadership, find mentorship, and develop relationships with each other. These clubs are sustained and grown with the support of the districts, the school administration, and especially the club advisors.
Currently, Indiana County is home to three high school ATHENA clubs: Indiana Area High School, Marion Center High School, and United High School.
S&T Bank has been a generous financial supporter of the development of the presentation of the ATHENA leadership model in Indiana County schools.
